The Employment Unit has made great gains since its launching this new Work Unit. Three of our Clubhouse members are actively seeking employment and three others are preparing to begin their job searches and have started working in our Work Readiness Program binders.
We are very excited to report that Jason W. accepted a job at Whole Foods and is completed his orientation and has been working there for a month. Congratulations!! Mike J. has just started a volunteer position with a social service organization.
Our Employment Unit has started Interpersonal Skill Group and members are enjoying this social skills group on Thursday afternoon. Our current focus is on self-exploration, so that we can be aware of strengths and weaknesses, how to maximize them, and/or compensate for them.
Our goal is to improve social skills to prepare for successful employment.
In addition, Mary, our Employment Unit Coordinator, has completed a Veteran’s Cash grant through the Illinois Lottery, is working on a Dr. Scholl’s Foundation grant, and we’ve been invited to apply for the next grant from REDF (The Roberts Enterprise Development Fund) in March of 2018. REDF is the only philanthropy fund in the United States that invests exclusively in social enterprises focused on employment. Funding from REDF would benefit our Flour to Empower bakery.
Michael J. (a.k.a. Mike) is a member of Synapse House and a very friendly, jovial fella. We are friends. We converse daily while at Synapse House, making jokes and laughing a lot.
Mike had been a semi-truck driver for fifteen years before his brain injury. When he started his tenure at Synapse House he couldn’t complete a sentence, finish a task or sit still. After six months at the “House,” he can perform tasks and answer questions in whole sentences. Mike’s progress demonstrates measured steps forward in his cognitive recovery. He found a renewed sense of pride in his children and family and continues to make progress while he is with Synapse House.
It has been two and a half years since he joined Synapse House. He has recently accepted a volunteer position as he looks for gainful employment.
